Garden Harmony

Five months of the year, the gardens of Scandinavia are asleep. The ground is frozen, and the flowers have withered. It’s quiet and still. In late March, winter begins to loosen its grip and you can hear the birds sing again. Nature is ready for a visit. The sun feels warm on everyone’s faces and it’s time to tend the garden, carefully removing the signs of winter. The roses wake up from their peaceful slumber. Slowly reaching for the sky, clinging on to the wall and waiting for their vibrant petals to return. Their sweet and earthy scent fills the air, a welcome hint about what’s to come. From now until autumn people spend time in their gardens.

Midsummer Dream

Midsummer is here, the longest day of the year. Winter is far away and people gather to celebrate the returning light, the beginning of summer. Leaving the cities behind, longing for the lush countryside. Children pick seven different kinds of flowers and jump over seven hedges – all in total silence, or the magic is broken. Tonight, the flowers will lie under their pillows, while they will dream about the person they will spend their life with. Or so they say. Outside the night and the darkness hesitates, the sun refusing to set. And children will keep picking their seven flowers for generations to come.

Birch Bliss

There’s a place where Scandinavians go to get warm, where the sizzling heat happily embrace them. A place where people can sit together in absolute silence, alone with their thoughts. This special place is the sauna. And for hundreds of years, it’s been used for cleansing, relaxing and rejuvenation. The air is filled with a fresh scent of birch from the soft branches used to gently beat the skin. This is an awakening, a way to make the blood run faster through your veins. A basket with rough, heated stones sits in the corner, drenched in water to boost the humidity. People will stay in the heat for as long as it takes to find peace of mind.

Winter Swim

It’s said to relieve stress and pain. Improve circulation and boost the immune system. It’s said to make you feel reborn, refreshed. Ready for whatever awaits you. It’s time to take a deep breath and gather courage. Sinking down in the dark water makes your body react, every inch is wide awake, ready to escape. The sensation is indescribable, incomparable. A few strokes and the cold is bearable. Nature is all around, clouds whirling by in the sky. The wind blowing gently in the trees. The scent of frozen flora and rich fir fills the air. Until spring, people will go winter swimming – an exhilarating escape that boosts body and mind.

Soothing Sun

The sky is true blue and the birds are singing joyfully. People are packing their picnic baskets, heading out to enjoy the woods, the fields, the beaches. Sitting on colourful blankets, sipping on homemade lemonade. Now and then they turn towards the sun, sighing, a smile on their faces. The season of light lies ahead. In Scandinavia everyone is free to roam, to explore nature and the wildlife. To swim in the lakes. Pick wild berries. Go hiking. Even spend the night. And as often as they can, people will be having picnics, enjoying nature. It doesn’t matter if the wind blows.
